On June 8th, the Mercatus Center at George Mason University hosted the symposium Building a Regulatory Budget: What to Know and Where to Start. The event featured two panels of distinguished speakers and remarks from Senators Ron Johnson and Mike Enzi.

During the first panel, moderated by Susan Dudley, Marcus Peacock and Jitinder Kohli explored the regulatory budget as put into practice by the United Kingdom. Particularly focusing on the recently implemented British regulatory system, they considered how substantive regulatory reform can take place without comprising important regulatory protections.

For the second panel, moderated by Bill Beach, Keith Hall and Paul Winfree discussed the infrastructure necessary for implementing a regulatory budget in the United States. They examined the strengths and weaknesses of the analytical infrastructure within the Congressional Budget Office and the White House, and what would have to change in order to sufficiently manage a regulatory budget.

Following the panels, Senators Johnson and Enzi reiterated the importance of regulatory reform and how the implementation of a regulatory budget could contribute to the goal of reform.
